Dare to Die
Annie Darling's idyllic South Carolina sea island turns fearful in the 19th Death on Demand mystery novel. Annie, owner of the Death on Demand mystery bookstore, and her husband Max, who runs a private inquiry agency, are staying at a small island motel owned by their friends Ingrid and Duane Webb.
Annie and Max had planned a party to celebrate moving into their restored antebellum home but a plumbing leak moves them to Nightingale Courts and the party to a seaside pavilion.
Ingrid works at Death on Demand. When she and Duane are called away on a family emergency, Annie and Max promise to take care of Nightingale Courts. As Ingrid and Duane leave, he turns and asks Annie to keep an eye on the young woman who checked in yesterday. She came in the rain. Alone. On a bicycle.
The mysterious arrival of Iris shocks their sea island and stirs up more than just gossip. It turns out that Iris, the beautiful stranger, is a former resident of Broward's Rock. Her return is the start of a downward spiral that pits neighbor against neighbor.
Things take a turn for the worse when Annie befriends Iris and invites her to attend the Darlings' party at the pavilion where Death is the uninvited guest. Suddenly, Max and Annie find themselves in the middle of a fight they don't understand and at the mercy of an unknown assailant who's trying to kill them. They can only be certain of one fact -- the killer is one of their friends.
